The Emmy’s 2020: Annabelle’s Faves

It’s Emmy’s Eve! The annual television award show is taking on a new format tomorrow as it goes completely virtual. Nominees this year were told to “come as you are — but make an effort.” Whether this will mean celebs are sporting ballgowns or tie dye lounge sets….who’s to say. Regardless, I can’t wait to watch Jen Aniston make her acceptance speech from her couch.

In celebration, I thought I’d highlight a few of my favorite shows from the list of those nominated. These all happen to include powerful female leads- brava to that! Make sure to scroll down under my ramblings to check out some of our reader’s favorite binge watches during quarantine.

The Great
Huzzah! I’m a fiend for any good period piece, so I practically salivated at the lavish, Elle Fanning-infused trailer for the Great. Once my mom and I hit play, we were hooked. The historical comedy is billed as an “occasionally true story” based on the 18th century Russian Court of Peter III. With its opulent sets, whimsical costumes, and tongue-in-cheek dialogue, it bears a resemblance to Sofia Coppola’s Marie Anotinette. Catherine (Catherine the Great, that is) arrives in Russia looking for people to match her fiery, bookish intellect and a head-over-heels marriage with her blind date of a husband. Instead, she gets a pet grizzly bear and a whole lot of unsatisfying…errrr…romantic rendezvous.

Dead to Me
If you’re mourning the end of Big Little Lies, Dead to Me is the perfect show to fill your suburban Californian mom show void. It brings a comedy spin onto a dark plotline and completely encaptures you with the performances of Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. Both women are nominated for the same category, and my fingers are crossed that one of them receives that little golden statue — they deserve it!

The Morning Show
It might just be the journalism major in me, but I’m obsessed with this behind the scenes look into the complicated world of broadcast news and the media industry. The Morning Show is star-studded Apple+ creation that follows the chaos of morning television after a lead anchor (Steve Carrell) has sexual assault allegations brought upon him. The #MeToo concept draws some really interesting parallels to the sexual assault allegations against Matt Lauer back in 2017. If topics like gender power dynamics, truthful reporting, and entertainment vs. information are at all titillating to you, add The Morning Show to your streaming queue.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel brings va-va-voom right to your laptop screen, giving a witty look into what the NYC stand-up comedy scene was like in the 1940s….all from the perspective of a #independentwoman. Whether she’s prancing around her Upper West Side apartment or performing at an underground club downtown, The Talented Mrs. Brosnahan adds her own charm to each scene. Also a random connection but Abe Weinberg (Maisel’s dad) is played by an actor that was also in Spy Kids — talk about range.
