Swiss Wonderland: Day 5 & 6

DAY 5

Another day, another excursion to the top of a mountain! During the first half of our 24 hours, we headed up to the mountain Jungfraujoch. Or as Ellie declared it, the “Eiffel Tower of Europe.” It’s an establishment with the whole nine yards: stunning panoramic views, an ice museum, and of course a Lindt “Swiss Chocolate Heaven.” Because we are religiously devoted to Lindor truffles, this interactive museum and shop was a dream come true.

In the afternoon, we took a spontaneous detour to Lauterbrunnen, a fairytale town with mountain views and too many waterfalls to keep track of. Our mom has had her heart set on visiting ever since finding it on Pinterest a few months ago. She wasn’t the only one who has been enchanted by the town; Lauterbrunnen was the inspiration for Rivendell (the Elven town in Lord of the Rings, for our non-hobbit readers).

Our day was made when we found the Airtime Cafe for lunch. Any of our friends could tell you this place was the Cook Aesthetic, from the chinoiserie dishes to the punny menu item names.

DAY 6

For our final destination of the trip, we were off to Lucerne by train. Choo, choo! This city differed from our previous locales because it had less of a chalet mountain feel and was more of the poster child for European cities. The city’s grander size had its perks, like the killer shopping.

We were lucky enough to stay in the stunning Grand Hotel National. It was founded in 1870 and resembled a less pink version of Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel. We were also lucky (?) enough to drop in during Lucerne’s Blue Balls music festival. We’re not 100% sure the translation carried over…
