Happy beginning of the holiday season! Being away at college for the first semester ever, Thanksgiving was a way bigger deal this year than it’s ever been for me. Being able to reunite with my family and reflect on how grateful I am for the amazing friends and experiences I’ve had in college so far was blissful. Plus, sleeping in a non-twin size bed and binging Lifetime movies for a week was not at all shabby. Here’s a small peak into some of our Thanksgiving setup.
My mom, who I consider to be the queen of all things visual, loves to insert little seasonal hints throughout the house, whether that’s pilgrim salt and pepper shakers or a fake owl above the mirror, which terrorizes me every time I walk in the door. She takes the same approach when setting the table, trying to incorporate an unexpected element each year. This year that was the blue willow chinoiserie plates, which help to break up the warm color palette.
Her #1 hint to crafting your perfect tablescape is to plan a few days ahead and play with a fun mix of plates, patterns, chargers, aesthetics, and colors (she avoids a “matchy matchy” look like the Bubonic plague). Each Thanksgiving, our family is surprised with a new combo, as she always likes to change things up and let the floral arrangements (done by the Little Flower Shop) drive the color scheme.
To create a rustic feel, she used an antique toolbox as a centerpiece and a campy blanket as the tablecloth. Who knew a meal could have such an enchanting backdrop to it!
You may or may not have seen my dad touch on his cheese board on our Instagram stories, but if you haven’t here’s a little recap!
He always aims for a solid balance of different textures, colors, and flavors. The powerful spiciness of chili pepper cheese is paired with a milder gouda and an in-between smoky cheddar. The creamy brie is perfect for spreading over crackers.
Speaking of which, he loves to use a classic white Carr cracker because it doesn’t take away from the pesto, summer sausage, or pesto. He gathers all these ingredients at our family favorite, McGonigle’s Market.
