DAYDREAMING OF DC

Good riddance! I haven’t taken my eyes off a screen since yesterday’s inauguration. Biden and Harris’ arrival in the White House has me wishing I could have been there to see the turnaround myself, but reminded me of the last time I visited the nation’s capital. A year ago this month, I took a trip with friends for a long weekend to see Washington DC for my first time. This week has me feeling extra patriotic, so I thought I’d share the outfits that matched my mood.

My two friends and I made the drive up from our North Carolina campus on a Friday afternoon, eager to explore the city. Since they had both been to DC before, they acted as tour guides for the weekend. We dedicated our first day to some the checklist attractions: the National Mall monuments, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and of course – the Milk Bar store (I’d been dying to go, OK?). We kicked off our weekend by meeting a local friend at the chic and buzzy Unconventional Diner for dinner. If our day of all-American sightseeing wasn’t enough to inspire us, this menu sure did the trick.

On our second day, we spent all morning skipping around the city’s museums, only stopping to satisfy our ramen cravings at Bantam King near our hotel. My favorite was the National Portrait Gallery, where I was especially eager to see the newly installed renditions of the Obamas. We shuffled over to Georgetown after lunch to tour its charming streets. Between the historic brick homes, waterfront views, and famously tempting cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcake, I’m still counting the days until I can visit this neighborhood again.

By Sunday, we were ready to make the road trip back to school. Before heading back, we popped by the Capitol Building in all its glory. Too bad there were no Ella Emhoff sightings while we were there – I would have loved to compare plaid notes!

Thanks to the wonderful Sadie Traylor for taking these photos of me, and for doing all the driving in DC! 😉
